Meathead to the Rescue?
Well, I just don't know what to think about this, fellas. God knows I spent a lot of years waiting for a knight in shining armor to come riding along, before I figured out I had to be my own knight. But somehow I just never imagined he would look anything like . . . Rob Reiner?
I'll admit that it makes me just a tiny bit leery of what's going on; because even after all these years, I can't understand why a straight man would be on our side. I still at a deep level see them as implacably hostile to all gays, every one of them.
But - he apparently is putting his money where his mouth is. And so is Ted Olson, the mega-Republican lawyer for our side. Even the judge in this case is a Republican, and he seems kinda sorta to be leaning in our direction. Go figure. I can't keep up with all the changes in the world, you know? Is all this really possible? Cleve Jones seems to be just fine with Reiner's left-field, go-for-broke, Lone Ranger strategy.
So to them I say, go ahead and prove me wrong, boys: show me you really aren't like those nasty schoolyard creeps and bullies from long ago.
Here's Rachel's interview with Olson and Boies. These guys are major-league players at the top of their game, and they know how to play political hardball - which makes this case that much more exciting.

Frat Boys Gone Wild
Fraternity from Richard Mosse on Vimeo.
Artist's blurb:
Fraternity was shot at Yale University's infamous DKE frat house in under an hour. The men were happy to participate in the project in exchange for a keg of beer. They compete against each other to shout or scream the loudest and for the longest time. When they cannot scream any longer they must stop, and cannot begin again. DKE (pronounced Deke) stands for Delta Kappa Epsilon, and counts five US presidents in its alumni, including George Bush Jr, George Bush Sr, Gerald Ford and Theodore Roosevelt. Other famous Dekes include three Justices of the US Supreme Court, one Vice President, and countless State Governors, Senators and Speakers.
Guys like this are guys who end up running the country. Think about it.

A Telling Jest
I must say in all seriousness that while I respect any serious religious decision, I have the greatest admiration for women and gays who remain in the church despite the grief they get from the official church. This quote by Catholic author and journalist David Gibson in the Washington Post jumped out at me. If you go read it in context, you will see that he is making a little joke.
I am a convert, at the age of 30, and as I like to say that as a straight white male the Catholic Church is a natural fit for me. I could even grow up to be pope!
And yet - he's not joking. He's stating a very significant truth: the vast majority of churches are run by and for straight people, and historically that means straight men.
I've blogged a couple times before about how, when my husband died, the scales fell from my eyes about our good Christian friends and neighbors - about how coldly and cruelly I was treated - about how the most churchified people were the most callous.
I won't rehash that whole story here - you can go read it in the Blue Truck archives if you like - but it really did bring home to me the fact that we gays are simply not wanted in church.
Church is specifically designed for the straight people. If you aren't straight - you simply don't belong there. And you are wasting your time trying to fit in, as I tried for 30 years - because you will never fit in; you're gay.
Maybe there is an exception here or there. Maybe in some particular locales in the blue states, it's different.
But I stand by what I just wrote. If you are gay, you don't belong in church. They don't want you.
Starting as a young teenager, I searched and researched the Scriptures for years, trying in vain to find an out, a loophole, some indication that God put a word of love and care for gays in the Bible.
But that search will run you crazy - it did me, for a time. Because He didn't put that word, that note of mercy in there.
This hurt me a lot; until it dawned on me the reason why: the Bible was written by and for straight men.
Straight men who made God in their own image.
Much more I could say on this topic - and some of you may have differing views - but I'll stop right there for now. Except to say that in a quiet, interior way, faith remains important to me; but I've come to realize that God is much bigger than the church, and even bigger than the Bible.
And God is Love.

Straights Destroying the American Family
Oh my. What would Ward and June Cleaver have said?
According to a report today in the New York Times, millions of straight guys are catching a free ride, and the straight girls are, apparently, loving it. (You see how those people are? No respect for traditional values, religion, or morality.)
Unmarried mothers gave birth to 4 out of every 10 babies born in the United States in 2007, a share that is increasing rapidly both here and abroad, according to government figures released Wednesday.Conservatives, please note: none of the above has anything whatsoever to do with gay people or same-sex marriage.
Before 1970, most unmarried mothers were teenagers. But in recent years the birthrate among unmarried women in their 20s and 30s has soared — rising 34 percent since 2002, for example, in women ages 30 to 34. In 2007, women in their 20s had 60 percent of all babies born out of wedlock, teenagers had 23 percent and women 30 and older had 17 percent.
Much of the increase in unmarried births has occurred among parents who are living together but are not married, cohabitation arrangements that tend to be less stable than marriages, studies show.
The pattern has been particularly pronounced among Hispanic women, climbing 20 percent from 2002 to 2006, the most recent year for which racial breakdowns are available. Eleven percent of unmarried Hispanic women had a baby in 2006, compared with 7 percent of unmarried black women and 3 percent of unmarried white women, according to government data drawn from birth certificates.
Titled “Changing Patterns of Nonmarital Childbearing in the United States,” the report was released by the National Center for Health Statistics, part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Out-of-wedlock births are also rising in much of the industrialized world: in Iceland, 66 percent of children are born to unmarried mothers; in Sweden, the share is 55 percent. (In other societies, though, the phenomenon remains rare — just 2 percent in Japan, for example.)
But experts say the increases in the United States are of greater concern because couples in many other countries tend to be more stable and government support for children is often higher.
“In Sweden, you see very little variation in the outcome of children based on marital status. Everybody does fairly well,” said Wendy Manning, a professor of sociology at Bowling Green State University in Ohio. “In the U.S., there’s much more disparity.” . . .
The District of Columbia and Mississippi had the highest rates of out-of-wedlock births in 2007: 59 percent and 54 percent, respectively. The lowest rate, 20 percent, was in Utah. In New York, the rate was 41 percent; in New Jersey, 34 percent; and in Connecticut, 35 percent. Sarah S. Brown, chief executive of the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy, a nonprofit advocacy group, said sex and pregnancy were handled far too cavalierly in the United States, where rates of unplanned pregnancies, births and abortions are far higher than those of other industrialized nations.
“These trends may meet the needs of young adults,” she said, “but it’s far from clear that it’s helpful for children.”
It's all your doing, straight people. So leave us gays out of the conversation, please - you want a scapegoat, he's right there in the mirror, looking at you. Just zip it up buddy - your mouth and your pants.
In fact, a statistic often overlooked by conservatives is that gay sex actually promotes family values by reducing the chance of unplanned preganancy to zero.
And aren't you glad, fellas?

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun
According to Think Progress:
When Van Susteren asked Gov. Palin, who joined the interview, about abstinence, she seemed similarly dismissive of her former views on abstinence, admitting, "It sounds naive.” Bristol added, “I just — I hope that people learn from my story and just, like, I don’t know, prevent teen pregnancy, I guess.”In other words, screw all you want if you're straight and use a rubber, that's the way to go. Did you get that, kids?
But if you're gay and just want to acquire sexual pleasure, well, read the next post, from Utah.

Adultery, Anyone?
The NFL and NBC turned it down at the national level, but this ad for the AshleyMadison web site - specifically targeted to married people seeking adulterous affairs - ran in Texas during the Superbowl on Sunday. The company says Texas is its fastest-growing market, and by Monday afternoon the site had received nearly 150,000 hits just from the Houston area alone, according to the Houston Chronicle.
Um, how does this preserve the traditional family? I thought it was teh gayz who were tearing it all up. No?
And isn't adultery one of the Big Ten? You see what that lifestyle leads to when people choose to live that way.
And we're not even gonna talk about the unmarried, unemployed octuplet woman.

30 Years of Chippendales
(BTW - I always think there's something highly suspect about guys who use that shove-down-my-throat metaphor, don't you?)
Big Toys, Little Boys
Oh yeah, like you ain't a real man if your truck ain't as butch as mine. Yeah, right. As if I give a flip.
Although now that I've seen the ads, if I ever found Howie Long's truck next to mine in the parking lot at wally world, I just might have a Towanda! moment . . . .
Because it's asshole jocks like that who grow up to be the Cheneys and Rumsfelds of this world.

The Dirty Show
Seems there's this major exhibit of (mostly straight) erotic art called The Dirty Show opening in Detroit next month. Which is a good thing, because if it opened in Dallas, our good Christianists would probably riot in the streets and burn the place down.Once they'd taken a really good gander at all of it.
