I have a freind who does that it is pisses me off. Why even bother to come over and visit if you are going to play with your phone the whole time.

Exactly. It's damn rude and totally inconsiderate.

When I got my new HTC Evo it was because of my work - being a systems admin damned near requires me to have an umbilical cord attached to our servers - and it does give me a fair amount of flexibility in the office or on site.
At home? Half the time I forget that I own the damned thing, and I'm lucky if I remember to plug the little power-sucker into the charger.
As for that comic, I don't know whether to laugh hysterically or throw a fit. I've known so many people who become addicted to their phone/pda/tablet and would rather text you than talk to you from across the coffee table. One of my misbegotten drag-children pulled that on me once - and it was the last time he did. After I ripped the iPhone out of his hand and tossed it across the livingroom I asked him, "I wonder if you would be a better conversationalist if I shoved that thing up your ass?... Meh, probably not." And they wonder why I'm "Mommie Dammit"...
