The Pork Boys do Thanksgiving, 2010

Last Monday, the ex-roommate had me over for a belated Thanksgiving dinner, and I just now got the pics.  He set a lovely table, as usual, with the crystal and a cornucopia centerpiece he made.  He's much more artistic and domestic than I am, so that was a nice change from paper plates and TV dinners.  And the menu was scrumptious.  I tell you what.

First, for the hors d'oeuvre, my sole culinary contribution:  deviled eggs.  Not haute cuisine, but I can tell you that the Pork Boys dearly love them, and devoured nearly all two dozen before we ever got to the dinner table.

Then for the appetizer, one of his specialities:  melt-in-your-mouth chicken liver and bacon wraps on skewers.  Oh my, fellas.  Damn near as good as sex.  Trust me on that.

And the meal:
  • Roasted capon (a first for both of us; tastes very much like turkey)
  • Oyster and bacon dressing
  • Baked sweet potatoes
  • Mashed potatoes and giblet gravy
  • Steamed asparagus with homemade hollandaise sauce (another specialty, and it's to die for)
  • Crescent rolls
For dessert:  Granny in a Blanket - a name I devised for this simple but scrumptious treat he invented (Granny Smith apples filled with caramel sauce and baked in pastry dough, topped with vanilla ice cream)

I brought the wine and the ice cream, and he did the rest.  Lots of good eating and good conversation.  Just wish we'd thought to take pictures of the food, but the Pork Boys couldn't wait for photos.

He wants to start a catering business after he retires in a couple of years, and I think he'd be great at that.  We're thinking half-seriously about making some cooking videos, him to cook and me to film.  Would be fun if we ever found the time to do it.

I will totally watch your cooking videos!

Rumaki (the bacon-wrapped chicken livers) is a long time favorite of mine. Dammit, now I'm hungry.
