Tired Old Queen at the Movies: Rawhide

Steve Hayes reviews the 1951 Western:
Tyrone Power and Susan Hayward battle a gang of escaped convicts in "the back of beyond" in Henry Hathaway's brilliant western suspense classic, RAWHIDE. Shot on location at the foot of the Rockies, with a supporting cast that includes Edgar Buchanan as Power's crusty companion, Hugh Marlowe as the "meanest of the mean," wild-eyed Jack Elam, George Tobias, and Dean Jagger as his henchmen, the action is fast-paced, the tension unrelieved, and the mounting suspense and final shootout not to be missed!

Russ, Yours is the first site where I've seen these reviews, and I must say he makes them fun. I loved Susan Hayward too, and Steve says why; she was a tough broad if ever there was one. Strangely, I later got to know a seminarian who was Hayward's private chaplain for awhile as she was dying of cancer in a hospital in Atlanta; that radiation poisoning, I suppose. He did his undergrad at Emery before seminary; she was an Episcopalian. He's a rector now in Florida.

Glad I could turn you on to the reviews. Steve is a trip, he ought to have his own TV show, or at least have a guest spot on TCM.

Hayward, like many others of her co-stars, died of cancer due to radiation poisoning while shooting a film on location in .... (you got me there ...!) ... Texas?, Utah?, ... anyhow, the government was doing some test, research or try-outs involving potentially hazardous materials. It was unknown, so they claimed, that this may lead to cancer. Forgotten where exactly I heard about this, but I HAVE ... sure you can research it online if you wanna know more!

It was an atomic bomb test that unexpectedly rained fallout on St. George, Utah, where the movie The Conqueror was being filmed in 1953.
