Weekend Getaway: The Golden Arrow to Paris

From 1929 to 1972, the all-Pullman Golden Arrow was the first-class way to travel from London to Paris and back.  Here is a color film of the six-hour journey by train and ferry, shot in 1949 - wouldn't it be loverly to take that trip today?

Aah, such nostalgia! I must have seen the SS Invicta many times on our weekend family outings to Dover when a child in the 50’s and 60’s. The Golden Arrow too, before the railway line that lay just beyond the bottom of our garden in Broadstairs was electrified.

I loved the terribly British voiceover's quip, “Only the French could have envisaged the Elysian Fields as a street!” What does M.P. say to that slightly less than cordiale entente I wonder?

Hahaha! I will have to ask him.

So glad to see your comment. I suppose your broken arm is on the mend now? Grin.

I took it once from Paris to London, or Dover... A lot more complicated in ancient times!

You really did? Oh, what fun!
