It’s a little disturbing that the ship will be sunk in ocean waters. While it will become a reef won’t it also be a source of pollution? I’m not an oceanographer so what do I know?
The news story I read indicated that it is going to Mobile first, where there are huge dockyards, and will be stripped of all hazardous materials. Then it will be towed out to sea 20 miles south of Fort Walton Beach, Florida, and sunk so it sits upright on the ocean floor. How that can be managed is beyond me, but that's the plan.
So not to worry about pollution. Floridians on the Emerald Coast are very protective of their sugar-white sand beaches, and sounds like those concerned with this monumental project have got it covered.
