Sunday Drive: Chad & Jeremy, A Summer Song

Chad & Jeremy take us back to the sunny, carefree days of the British Invasion with this lilting dream of a song:

Goodness gracious, how did we all get to be so old?

I used to have a collection of "summer songs" - In the Summertime, Mungo Jerry; Summer in the City, Lovin' Spoonful; Summertime, Summertime, the Jamies; Lazy, Hazy Crazy Days of Summer, Nat K Cole; Summer, War; and so many more: Under the Boardwalk, all the Beach Boys....you know.

Yeah, Russ, How DID we get to be so old? Answer: We survived.

I saw David Crosby on late night talk...now HE looks OLD.

I can't believe I was actually at WOODSTOCK 50 years ago!!!! So was David Crosby CSN&Y

Funny how 50 years looked so very long at the starting end, but from this end looking back, it seems so much shorter. Like when we were kids, thinking oh boy, a whole summer of no school ahead - and yet, summer never lasted quite as long as we wanted it to.

I guess we can be grateful to have survived to these sunset years, especially when we think of those who did not.

Have to say, though, I don't like this scary, unsettled, obnoxious century one bit. For all its faults and flaws, the second half of the 20th century was a good time to be alive, speaking strictly of everyday middle-class life in these United States, and the comforts and conveniences we took for granted. Hope that continues, but I have my doubts nowadays.
