A fascinating glimpse into the studio recording of this song:
Just the song, if you want to hear the standard version:
A gay man's view of the world from down Texas way

I certainly do relate. i used to sing this song in the summer of '66 with my schoolboy crush Wayne very much in mind, or Dennis Wilson. Happy days!
I must admit I never made the same-sex interpretation of the lyrics to this song until our lesbian friends mentioned playing it at their wedding. How appropriate!
I'm going to put myself out there and say: I always loved the Beach Boys and envied their Surfer Girl no end. Their lyrics gave me an empty, longing feeling inside, but I idolized them nonetheless. I even talk about all this in my memoir, (the publication of which is out of my hands and currently eludes me).
The behind the scenes video was quite interesting; musicians fascinate me; they posses a section of brain that I totally lack. I hear the music but I'm oblivious to the individual instruments. I'm sure I don't ever FULLY appreciate a song or a symphony because of it.
Like Tim, I too had my fantasy roommate - name of Tom from school…Love this sound.
Those mid-60's sounds are still my all-time faves. Glad you guys like them too.
Frank, let us know when your memoir comes out.
