The Impossible Dream

Your old Head Trucker is admittedly - and happily - behind the times in many ways.  The song is one of my favorite tunes from way back, but I never heard of this fellow until now.  All I can say is, What A Voice!  Wow.

If you like that, check out this other recording he did of the song, in which he reaches even higher in the last few bars.

Ken Burns: "The Choice Could Not Be Clearer"

If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of free men, we must live through all time or die by suicide.
-- Abraham Lincoln, 1838

Forsaking his customary neutrality, renowned filmmaker Ken Burns (finally looking his age at 70) gave the commencement address at Brandeis University last week, a warning and a clarion call:

Sunday Drive: Time Is Tight

From 1969 . . . 55 years ago . . . end of school . . . childhood's end . . . no longer a boy . . . not quite a man . . . Where would I go?  What would I do?  Who would I be?  No answers then . . . only the sound of happiness . . . a long road ahead . . . hopeward bound.

Cajun Comedian: Jonathan Perry

M.P. and I are working our way through some of this guy's videos.  Very funny - and you wouldn't believe his resume if I told you about it, so go look at it yourself.

You should understand that Cajuns are Southerners with a French twist and a splash of hot sauce.  They enjoy a bit more joie de vivre than their Anglo neighbors.  And like M.P., they are great cooks.

Selleck at 79

Selleck then.

Selleck now.

When Magnum, P. I. came out, I watched it religiously every week for years.  Tom Selleck was my dream man come to life in all outward appearance - for a time, I had a poster of him on my bedroom wall.  But life went on, real lovers came and went, and I lost track of him.

I haven't watched broadcast television for many years, and I had no idea he was/is starring in another hit TV show at this late date.  Good for him.  He looks like somebody's gruff old grandpa now - but a sexy grandpa.  CBS Sunday Morning gives us the update on Selleck and his remarkable career:

Sunday Drive: In the Garden

Down South here, this old hymn is one that everybody knows, and is often played at both weddings and funerals.  It was a favorite of my mama's, too.  Anne Murray gives a definitive performance:

However, I did not know until today how the lyrics came to be written, which adds greatly to the song's significance.

What We're Watching: Finding Lucy

This 2000 documentary about America's favorite redhead was produced by WNET for the PBS American Masters series, and won an Emmy Award.  I discovered it only the other day, and highly recommend it to all you Lucy fans out there.

Sunday Drive: Clair de Lune, Liberace

I took my mom to see him in concert back in the 1980s.  He was a master musician and a fabulous showman.  We had a great time.

Rest in peace, darling Mama.
