Poets' Corner: I'm Nobody! Who Are You?

Henry Scott Tuke - Boy on a beach, 1901
Boy on a Beach, Henry Scott Tuke, 1901

Emily Dickinson

(1830-1886)

I’m Nobody! Who are you?

Are you – Nobody – too?

Then there’s a pair of us!

Don't tell! they'd advertise – you know!

How dreary – to be – Somebody!

How public – like a Frog –

To tell one’s name – the livelong June –

To an admiring Bog!

Such great stuff from this gal - fun fact: Always using the common metre, her poems can be sung to the tune of Gilligan's Island.

Yes, they can also be sung to the tune of "Amazing Grace." I hadn't heard of the Gilligan theme in this context until now, though.
