Picture the cold, flat landscape of Lincolnshire, England, in January 1971. A raw RAF recruit awoken from slumber at 5:00 am to the sound of reveille! Sousa's Stars and Stripes blaring from the tannoys as we marched from the barracks to the canteen. It was so foggy we had to carry lamps when we crossed the main road that divided the camp. Every year on the 4th of July I'm reminded of it. Happy days! Have a good one America.

Sousa would certainly be an effective wake-up call - not to say maddening too. Thanks for the good wishes.

My son was in the Army band program and I've known several others who served in military bands - and they all, universally HATE Stars and Stripes Forever - especially the flutes. They have to play it at EVERY appearance.

I never thought of that - but I guess familiarity does breed contempt.
