You Can't Be a Christian and a Democrat

. . . at least not at Liberty University, founded by the late Jerry Falwell. University officials have ordered the student Democratic Club to disband and cease all mention of the party on campus, including on students' Facebook and Twitter accounts. Why? Because

The Democratic Party Platform is contrary to the mission of LU and to Christian doctrine (supports abortion, federal funding of abortion, advocates repeal of the federal Defense of Marriage Act, promotes the "LGBT" agenda, Hate Crimes, which include sexual orientation and gender identity, socialism, etc).

Rachel Maddow reports on this bullshit invasion of free speech rights:

What I Say: As this incident makes clear, Bible-belt religion is not about being sweet little Sunday-school Christians, full of mercy and goodness and brotherly love. Whatever it might have been in the past, it is now a fascist, mind-controlling, totalitarian political movement: reminds me very much of the Pharisees that Jesus so roundly condemned.

You can't be a Christian and a Democrat. That, my friends, is the unfortunate strong belief of not merely some wingnuts scattered here or there - but of many millions of people all over the Bible Belt, including your workmates, neighbors, and even kinfolk, as well as mine.
