Down South here, this old hymn is one that everybody knows, and is often played at both weddings and funerals. It was a favorite of my mama's, too. Anne Murray gives a definitive performance:

When I saw the film "Nashville", I heard Ronee Blakly sing "In the Garden." I had never heard the song before, and like Anne Murray said, it has never left me. I still miss hearing Anne sing; so sorry she retired.
Yes, Anne has a beautiful, God-given voice that suits this song so well, and many others besides. Her clear, resonant voice is in that sweet spot between your typical high woman's voice and low man's voice - a very, very pleasant sound. Karen Carpenter's voice was like that, too.
