Julia demonstrates the making of a French yule log cake. Also in this episode: Julia copes with twig failure; how to make spun sugar with a broomstick. First aired fifty Christmases ago, in 1964:
France is not the only country where these are made. In Britain we use a Swiss roll as the base to make our Christmas Logs; jelly is something very different from jam! Never thought of putting mushrooms on it, but you can put a chocolate bird's nest with sugar eggs inside on the log for the Easter version!
Christmas 1965 a friend in imitation of Julia made his first Buche de Noel. It was a triumph and I will always remember this with many other memories of a wonderful guy who didn't make it through the plague.

So who copied from whom, France or Britain? Grin.

A bittersweet memory, I'm sure.
